At the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Deptartment of Radiation Physics, research on various aspects and uses of radiation are performed. Ionizing radiation is a part of radiation therapy and diagnosis with x-rays and radioactive substances. Non-ionizing radiation is utilized in diagnosis with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. In environmental radiology radiation sources in our environment and transport of radioactive materials in biological systems are studied. Knowledge of the impact of radiation on living cells, tissues and organisms (radiation biology) is important for better understanding of mechanisms behind radiation induced effects, and for assessing radiation risks. The current research group conducts studies in radiation biology with modern genetic and molecular methods.
Subject area description
The current research in radiobiology in the research group is focused on better understanding of biological mechanisms in vivo after exposure to radionuclides or ionizing radiation externally. The applications studied are low-dose and dose rate exposure on normal tissues and high dose exposure for radionuclide therapy or external radiotherapy of cancer diseases. The work includes optimization of radiotherapy (high effects on tumour and low effects on normal tissues. Biomarkers are suggested and validated.
The aim of the study will be to examine primarily epigenetic effects of exposure of radioiodine (I-131) on thyroid and other tissues of importance in an in vivo model. We have previously studied effects on gene and protein expression in similar models. I-131 is commonly used in clinical routine methods for diagnosis and therapy of e.g. thyroid diseases. I-131 is also released at various nuclear accidents and then expose many humans. The results of this project will contribute to fill the knowledge gap related to mechanisms of radiation on organisms.
The work tasks include all parts of research, such as research planning, experimental performance, data analysis, manuscript writing, etc.
The work will be performed together with researchers and PhD students in a multidisciplinary research group and network consisting of physicists, geneticists, biologists, pathologists and surgeons.
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here, preferably within radiation biology, but otherwise related to biology, genetics, biotechnology or radiation sciences.
Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.
