On January 8, 2020, a Ukrainian airliner crashed near Tehran, Iran. Canada and the world were shaken by the crash which claimed the lives of 57 Canadians, with 34 victims employed at or studying in universities and colleges in Ontario. The Ministry of Colleges and Universities announced the Remembrance Scholarships initiative to honour the victims of the tragic plane crash. The Remembrance Scholarship is available to students attending a publicly-assisted college or university in Ontario in the 2020-21 academic year. Trent University received a one-time $10,000 Remembrance Scholarship from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

The Remembrance Scholarship is based on financial need and merit. Both domestic and international students are eligible for this award and must be pursuing an undergraduate-level program of study. Recipients must be enrolled and remain enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in an eligible program during the 2020-21 academic year.
