Project description:
The aim of this MSc by research project is to investigate whether player performance indicators (PIs) for football players who are playing in different domestic and European leagues are effective at predicting player success when transferred to, and playing in, a different league (EFL Championship or Premier League).

Initially, the candidate will review player match performance indicators and apply these to legacy data in order to parameterise and establish what characterises a successful player, such as, playing time, contribution to winning matches and influence on team performance (success criteria).

The candidate will then proceed to use the success criteria, to investigate which domestic and European leagues are the most indicative of player performance when transferred to the EFL Championship/Premier League. This will then be used to determine and predict which domestic and European league(s) provides the most successful transfers.

It would be essential that the candidate can apply data analysis to non-trivial tasks, as well as exposure to or knowledge of statistical analysis, exploratory analysis, data modelling or machine learning.

The candidate will be based at Swansea City AFC Training Ground and work alongside First Team Staff for the duration of the project.

Available resources/facilities: A-STEM labs and SCAFC training ground facilities. The data and software needed is already provided (Historical STATSBomb, OPTA & Wyscout Data Sets).

Candidates should hold a minimum of an upper second class (2:1) honours degree (or its equivalent) in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) including Sports Science, Economics.

Programming skills (MATLAB, PYTHON, R, Tableau, PowerBI, Alteryx) are desirable.
