Swim Wales, Sport Wales and Swansea University have teamed up to offer this exciting opportunity to undertake a PhD in performance optimization in international swimmers. Following the recent successes of Swim Wales at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games the team are keen to further develop their focus in the area of performance science. This PhD will combine the disciplines of performance physiology, biomechanics and engineering to answer key performance questions as identified by Swim Wales.
The successful candidate will also get the unique opportunity to not only develop their understanding of the research process but also get to work poolside with the athletes and coaches. In addition, the successful candidate will get mentoring as a performance scientist from senior practitioners at Sport Wales and have access to their CPD activities. Itâs envisaged that this PhD will bridge the gap between Science and Practice to ensure this body of research has maximum impact for Swim Wales.
The PhD will be supervised by Professor Liam Kilduff (Performance Science), Dr Neil Bezodis (Sports Biomechanist) and Dr Rowan Brown (Engineer).
Interviews will take place in the week commencing 27 August 2018.
Eligibility
Candidates should haveâŻa 2:1 or above in theirâŻundergraduate degree in Sport Science or a related subject.
In addition, a related Masterâs degree and completion of a research project as part of their previous studies are desirable.
Experience working in a sports science or performance science capacity within elite sports is essential.

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.
Benefits
The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £17,000 for three and a half years. There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
