Project Title: Micromechanics of the human femur during normal activity
Project summary
Digital technologies are expected to transform our understanding of how we move, how we prevent injuries, development and manage treatments for musculoskeletal health and how we design and manufacture orthopaedic devices toward a predictive, personalized and preventative medicine. The present project aims at developing a digital technology for studying how variations of anatomy, bone microstructural organization and motion determine function of the human hip for the virtual assessment of hip function in orthopaedic. The incumbent will combine imaging, computational modelling in biomechanics, machine learning and human motion technologies.
The PhD student will join an international team of scientists dedicated to advancing knowledge of human motor function and injury mechanisms for improving treatments and preventing injury. The project will be based in Queensland with collaborators spanning across Australia, Europe, and the US. Over three years, the successful applicants will have gained a broad range of technical skills and a sound understanding of the industry, positioning them ideally for a future career in a range of relevant disciplines.
The successful applicant will work closely with a team of international experts collaborating a Discovery Project sponsored by The Australian Research Council. The team includes scientists from leading Australian universities and international collaborators in EU and US. On a day to day basis, supervision will be provided by A/Professor Saulo Martelli who lead an active team of postgraduate researchers and technical staff in this area.
You will have the opportunity to:
  1. work with a team of international experts located in Australia, Europe, and the US.
  2. interact with orthopaedic industry, either locally or internationally.
  3. develop multidisciplinary skills across orthopaedics, engineering, and mathematics.

Location: The student will be based in the Science and Engineering Faculty at Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point, Brisbane.
Start date: The successful applicants are expected to commence by 31 January 2021 (or earlier, subject to negotiation)

  • Applicants should have completed a Bioengineering Degree, an Honours degree (class 1) in Biomechanics or Bioengineering, or a Master’s Degree with a significant research component (or equivalent).

Desired skills: The applicants would ideally have an interest in working predominantly in computational engineering. Skills in solid mechanics will be critical. Skills in mechanics of engineering and biological materials, machine learning and analytical skills in engineering or orthopaedics and statistic will also be important. The ideal candidate will have good communication and writing skills, and a basic understanding of data analysis
The provision of a scholarship is conditional on successful application and admission to the Doctor of Philosophy course. Eligibility for admission to a research degree is determined by the Graduate Research Centre.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, preference/priority will be given to Domestic or Resident International students but exceptional International applicants will be considered.

  • The successful applicant will receive a living allowance of $28,597 per annum for three years, indexed annually.
  • The scholarship is for full-time study and can be used to support living costs.
  • A six-month extension to the scholarship is also possible, subject to approval by QUT.
  • A successful international student will be considered for a HDR tuition fee sponsorship, if successful in receiving the scholarship.
