Physics: Fully Funded PhD Studentship at Swansea University: Quantum Information Science

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD position at the Department of Physics in the College of Science at Swansea University (Wales) to develop research in the field of theoretical quantum information. We seek a highly motivated PhD student to join our recently established theory group and work on:
Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing,Topological Quantum Error Correction, andProtocols for Implementation of Quantum Information Processing in State-of-the-Art Quantum-Optical and Solid-State Systems.
Quantum information science is a vibrant research field, which at a fundamental level aims at understanding the relationship between quantum physics and information. From a more practical viewpoint, research in this field intends to harness quantum effects for new ways of processing information, e.g. for the development of quantum computers. This PhD project is part of an international research collaboration, which in a combined effort of theoretical and experimental research aims at storing, protecting and processing fragile quantum information in so-called logical qubits, which outperform their constituting physical qubits. This is a key achievement to be reached in quantum error correction (QEC), on the route towards the realisation of large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers.
The theory research of this project will focus on, but is not limited to, the theoretical development of realistic schemes for fault-tolerant quantum information processing in state-of-the-art AMO and solid-state systems, in particular scalable trapped-ion architectures. One aim will be the development of such protocols, based on most modern approaches to QEC, and numerical and analytical studies of their performance under realistic noise sources. On the other hand, this will be accompanied by work on realistic schemes for quantum error correction in medium-scale experimental systems that are developed and explored by experimental colleagues collaborating with our group.

Successful candidates are expected to bring a high enthusiasm for the above research topics, hold a master's degree in Physics (EU/UK) or a related field, and have a strong background in one or more of the following:
Quantum computing and quantum information, quantum many-body systems, quantum optics, atomic physics and computer science. Programming skills and previous numerical simulation experience are not a prerequisite, but valuable for the project.The successful PhD candidate will join our recently established theory team, which currently involves four postdocs, one PhD student and master's students. She/he will also be an integral part of the vibrant scientific environment of the Atomic, Molecular and Quantum Physics (AMQP) Group at the Department of Physics, as well as of the Doctoral Training Centre at the College of Science at Swansea University. The successful PhD candidate will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate closely with leading international theoretical and experimental groups, including the experimental ion-trap quantum information group at Innsbruck University, as well as experimental groups at Mainz University, ETH Zurich, Sydney University, as well as theory groups at Oxford University, in the UK and Europe. The PhD candidate will be encouraged to participate in summer/winter schools and to present her/his research at conferences and workshops.

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus an annual stipend of £14,553.
