Physics: Fully Funded EPSRC and Industry PhD Scholarship: Glass as an Advanced Optoelectronic Interface

Project description: 
A PhD studentship is available in collaboration with Pilkington (NSG Group) to explore the innovative concept of advanced optoelectronic glass. An initial focus of the project will be the realization of fine metallic grids integrated with conducting oxides to create novel transparent conducting electrodes as a base technology for large surface area ‘indium free’ optoelectronics. In addition, the project will also investigate the possibility of combining state of the art vapour-phase techniques such as molecular vapour deposition, with solution processed coating of dielectrics to create hybrid substrate technologies amenable for building complex monolithic device architectures such as transparent thin film transistor back planes. The ultimate goal is to push the boundaries of glass as an optoelectronic interface, widening application range, reducing embodied energy in manufacturing, and facilitating hitherto unexplored technology spaces.

The project postgraduate research student will work closely with the industrial partner Pilkington (based at Lathom in Lancashire) and will be co-supervised by their technical staff. The project will also have access to state-of-the-art facilities at the new Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials due to come on-line at the Swansea University Bay Campus in 2022. This is an outstanding opportunity to undertake technology-relevant research in materials physics and optoelectronics.

Eligibility

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in physics, electrical engineering or materials science, and a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent research experience as demonstrated by international journal publications.

A strong background in clean room semiconductor, metal and dielectric fabrication and processing (lithography, deposition and etch) would be highly advantageous, as would knowledge and experience in one or more next generation optoelectronic platforms such as LEDs, solar cells or photodetectors.

For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests. We prefer candidates to have already met the English Language requirements at the point of application, although this is not a requirement.

The studentship is only open to UK nationals or those candidates with appropriate residency status.
