Physics: EPSRC Funded PhD Studentship at Swansea University: Thin Film Optoelectronic Device Physics
- Full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend
- 31 October 2017
Swansea University is a UK top 30 institution for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014), and has been named Welsh University of the Year 2017 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.
Start date: 1 January 2018
Supervisor 1: Professor Paul MeredithSupervisor 2: Dr Ardalan Armin
Project description: This project will focus on developing new methods, models and insight into the transport and electro-optical physics of next generation thin film optoelectronic devices and related materials. The project will involve developing and implementing state-of-the-art electrical and photophysical spectroscopic methods and investigating in particular the links and interdependencies between charge generation and extraction in thin film light harvesting devices such as solar cells and photodiodes. The project is part of a new endeavour at Swansea University in Sustainable Advanced Materials working within a multi-disciplinary group of physicists, materials scientists, chemists and engineers.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or Materials Science, and a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent research experience as demonstrated by international journal publications. A strong curriculum and portfolio of undergraduate courses covering condensed matter physics and optics, as well as additional materials-science related undergraduate or Master’s education is desirable. Prior experience in organic semiconductors or other disordered semiconductor materials would be an advantage, as would knowledge of device fabrication and testing in a clean room environment.
For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests.
Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is open to UK/EU candidates only.
Informal enquiries before the deadline for formal applications are welcome by emailing Professor Paul Meredith (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The TOEFL® test is a popular option for students to meet the English-language requirements for scholarships.
This is a three-year fully funded EPSRC scholarship covering UK/EU tuition fees and a stipend of £14,553 p.a.
