We are currently advertising full-time DOMESTIC (MQRES) and full-time INTERNATIONAL (iMQRES) Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships.
All four scholarships cover a bundled 2nd year Master of Research plus PhD program. However, students can start directly into a PhD program if they meet specific selection requirements.
Macquarie University and the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy (MUCHE) have  partnered with five pharmaceutical companies to develop a unique and innovative HDR program, the first of its kind in Australia. These partners include Amgen Australia, Janssen Australia, MSD Australia, Pfizer Australia, and Roche Australia.
The program is aimed at students willing to undertake research relevant to the Australian pharmaceutical sector and government. This could include:
  • Medicine choice among consumers and GPs.
  • Post-market surveillance of medicine outcomes.
  • Outcomes based payments within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Health equity, social justice and need.
  • Impact of medicines on broader economic outcomes.
  • International competitiveness of the Australian clinical trials sector.
  • Value of patient support programs.
  • Comparison of health technology assessment between Australia and other countries.
  • The impact of COVID 19 on the pharmaceutical sector.

While research questions will be determined by the student and their supervisor, students can also draw on outcomes from an annual pharmaceutical sector research workshop that will be organised and facilitated by MUCHE. Previous workshop outcomes can be found here.

  • Students must be willing and able to undertake research relevant to the Australian pharmaceutical sector and government. This is likely to be students with prior degrees related to health care fields, such as health economics, health policy, public health, epidemiology, health systems and informatics, and digital health.
  • However, we encourage other students that have studied outside these fields to apply for the scholarship if they can demonstrate an innovative research idea that is relevant to the pharmaceutical sector and government.
  • Students must have a high level of English language proficiency. To be considered for the bundled 2nd year Master of Research plus PhD program, candidates must have a Masters degree (by coursework, inclusive of research methodology units) with a distinction average grade.
  • To be considered for direct entry into the PhD program, candidates must have a Masters degree (by coursework) with distinction average results, and have:
completed Macquarie University Master of Research with at least 75 per cent in second year; or completed a Master of Philosophy; or completed a Masters (at least two years) from another institution with a major research component (a thesis component of approximately 50 per cent of the degree and 20,000 words) at distinction level.
  • PhD candidates must also demonstrate their interest in health care related research, and their strong analytical and writing skills reflected in research output (i.e. peer reviewed publications).
  • PhD candidates may be exempt from having to demonstrate a completed Master of Research, Master of Philosophy or Masters with a major research component, if they can demonstrate equivalence via their capacity to undertake independent research through publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Candidates may also be considered for both the Master of Research and a PhD (i.e., a four year scholarship bundle) if the prerequisites for direct entry into the PhD cannot be demonstrated, but prerequisites to the Master of Research can be demonstrated.
