Medical Engineering: Fully Funded EPSRC PhD Scholarship: Development of deepometry for the supervised and weakly supervised learning of imaging data

Funding providers: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

Subject areas: Medical Engineering

Project start date: 1 April 2022 (Enrolment open from mid-March)

Aligned programme of study: PhD in Medical Engineering

Mode of study: Full-time

Project supervisors: Dr Claire Barnes, Professor Paul Rees and Professor Huw Summers

Project description:

Imaging flow cytometry offers the opportunity to image millions of cells in a short period of time, it offers the possibility of being a transformative technology in the diagnosis of a host of diseases. This project will use the latest algorithms in AI to analyse the large big datasets generated using this system from a host of clinical collaborations.

Specifically we will build on, Deepometry, an open-source workflow developed with the objective of applying deep learning algorithms to the analysis of cytometry data which was developed in collaboration with GSK and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

‘Deepometry 2’ aims to develop our current software for use on both 2D and 3D images and to use the technology to image tissue from patient samples. This project will involve software development and the application of this deep learning tool to a number of exciting datasets.

The project will be in conjunction with researchers GSK, Philadelphia, US and Stevenage, UK who will provide financial assistance for the applicant to spend time at GSK and work on key research problems.
