Medical Engineering: Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship at Swansea University: Numerical modelling for venous or arterial blood valve performance assessment

A collaborative project between Swansea University and Haemaflow to undertake a computational study of the performance of non-return valves in pulsatile blood pumps. The project is to develop computational methods to predict blood damage and potential growth of blood clots in pulsatile flow. The research has two goals.  The first is to establish whether pulsatile flow offers a significant advantage over continuous flow. The second is to provide a basis for optimizing the design of blood pumps. Blood pumps are an essential component of a broad range of medical devices. For example, they are employed during cardiopulmonary surgery, during extracorporeal life support, and during dialysis. 
The research will include a literature review to investigate both numerical methods and clinical experimental data on haemorheology and the development and refinement of numerical methods to simulate steady and pulsatile blood flow. It is expected that commercial software (using finite volume and finite element methods) will be enhanced to incorporate the rheological properties of blood in order to simulate its flow through complex geometries. The model will also incorporate allowance for red cell fragility in order to predict blood damage and haemolysis. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with Haemaflow staff undertaking laboratory investigations to verify and calibrate the mathematical models produced.
Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 30 credit award.


Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in Physics, Engineering or a related subject. The candidates should have a basic knowledge of computational fluid dynamics and/or haemorheology. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £11,586 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances.‌
There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
