Medical Engineering: Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship: Feasibility study on the design of a hollow fiber CO2 removal device
Ventilation is a key clinical intervention for patients with lung disease and when combined with anaesthetics, closed-loop systems (aka circle systems) are used. These systems provide the patient with oxygen and anaesthetics whilst it removes CO2 from the system. The removal of CO2 currently happens through cartridges filled with pebbles of sodium hydroxide that react with the CO2. Each cartridge has a lifetime of a few hours and will then have to be replaced and disposed of.
This project seeks to investigate the feasibility of designing a sustainable alternative to the current CO2 removal cartridges, i.e. a device that can be used for longer amounts of time and is not single use and which satisfies the flow and pressure constraints of the clinical application. The student will go through the design process whilst justifying their choices through literature, computation and experimentation.
Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SME’s and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 40 credit award.
Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering discipline. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.
Experience in computational modelling, experimentation or design is expected, whilst an experience with medical applications is desirable.
We would normally expect the academic and English Language requirements to be met by point of application. For details on the University’s English Language entry requirements, please visit our website.
For more information on eligibility criteria please refer to section C of the KESS II Participant Proposal Form.
Any queries relating to Section C – Eligibility, please contact us via email.
The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £11,819 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances as assessed in section C point 4 on the KESS II Participant Proposal Form.
There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
Please note that students receiving KESS II support are not eligible for Postgraduate Master's Degree loan.
