Tuition Fee ONLY MSc by Research Scholarship: Using a 3D model to unlock the relationship between Staphylococcus epidermidis and host immune factors in medical device infections

Healthcare acquired infections associated with medical devices such as intravenous catheters, joint prostheses, shunts and heart valves cause substantial morbidity and mortality. These infections are commonly caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, a common constituent of the skin and mucus membranes of humans. A core objective of the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases research group is to investigate the hypothesis that medical device surface and host immune factors combine to influence the ability of Staphylococcus epidermidis to colonise and accumulate on such surfaces. Previous observations have indicated that host immune factors and type of medical device biomaterial affect the pathogenicity of S. epidermidis during infection. This project will use a collection of clinical S. epidermidis strains, relevant biomaterial surfaces, an ex vivo whole blood model, cell culture, confocal microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), quantitative PCR (qPCR), and ELISAs with the aim to unlock the relationship between S. epidermidis host immune factors and biomaterial surfaces using a 3D model. The work will be divided into two parts: Part 1 will determine S. epidermidis and host and cellular responses at transcriptional and protein levels in the presence of titanium (Ti) and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surfaces; and Part 2 will examine the influence of pre-coating Ti and Ti6Al4V surfaces with host-derived proteins on S. epidermidis colonisation and accumulation.
Candidates should have a minimum of 2.2 honours degree (or its equivalent) in Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Biology or a relevant discipline. Experience in microbiology and/or immunology is very desirable.
