SUNRISE is a Grand Challenge Research Funded project based at Swansea University with the aim of undertaking world-leading research and innovation to drive the development and demonstration of low cost sustainable energy systems applicable to rural communities in India. As part of this project the Photovoltaics research team led by Dr Trystan Watson at the SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge centre aims to develop a mechanism for the fabrication of low cost printed perovskite solar cells. The purpose of this project will be the demonstration of high throughput, low cost fabrication routes, based on continuous large scale manufacturing techniques, in particular related to the triple mesoscopic carbon perovskite solar cell. Perovskite solar cells represent a step change in solution-processed photovoltaics with recent efficiencies recorded at over 23% and this project represents an exciting opportunity to build on initial work carried out at SPECIFIC in this area. The project will link with other elements of the SUNRISE project both in the UK and India with the ambition of integrating the developed technologies in demonstrator buildings to showcase the potential of the ‘buildings as power stations’ concept.  
The successful candidate will not only have the opportunity of working with the existing dynamic and multi-disciplinary team at SPECIFIC but also have access to a broad range of equipment including over £5M of state of the art pilot manufacturing capabilities, extensive capabilities in photovoltaic and coating analysis as well as analytical techniques such as XRD, XPS, TEM and FEG-SEM.


Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (or its equivalent) in physics, chemistry or materials engineering or a master’s degree in similar subject area to the project. Applicants with some knowledge in printing technology or photovoltaics will be considered.
