SUNRISE is a Grand Challenge Research Funded project based at Swansea University with the aim of undertaking world-leading research and innovation to drive the development and demonstration of low cost sustainable energy systems applicable to rural communities in India. This PhD project will focus on the challenges of designing suitable buildings of a variety of typologies for deployment in India during the life of the project. The successful applicant will work with architects and building experts from the SPECIFIC IKC and from partners in India (including Tata Group) to develop the idea pioneered in Swansea for buildings to be ‘Active’ (i.e. energy positive generating more power than they use and with storage capability allowing off-grid energy hubs to be provided to rural communities). The integration of new types of PV (developed by the SUNRISE partners), novel storage and cooling solutions and opportunities for electric vehicle charging will all form part of the study. The project will link with other elements of the SUNRISE project both in the UK and India with the ambition of integrating the developed technologies in demonstrator buildings to showcase the potential of the ‘buildings as power stations’ concept. The applicant will spend periods of time at Indian research institutes and also support onsite delivery of ‘Active’ buildings for India. The successful candidate will not only have the opportunity of working with the existing dynamic and multi-disciplinary team at SPECIFIC but also have access to world leading facilities at Swansea and the other UK and India research partners.


Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (or its equivalent) in physical sciences, engineering or a master’s degree/work experience in similar subject area to the project. Applicants with some knowledge in renewable solar energy solutions will be considered.
