Materials Engineering: Fully Funded PhD Scholarship: Mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms of TIMETAL® 575
This scholarship is funded by EPSRC and TIMET UK.
TIMET UK (part of PCC Metals Group) will provide industrial sponsorship of an EPSRC DTP scholarship, for a PhD student to be jointly based at the Institute of Structural Materials, Swansea University and at the Timet UK plant at Waunarlwydd, Swansea. The PhD project will involve in-depth mechanical testing and characterisation of a recently developed titanium alloy, TIMETAL®-575, aimed at low temperature aero-engine disc or aerofoil applications. The work follows on from a previous PhD student at Swansea that supported the initial development of this alloy at a laboratory scale. The intention of this project is to assess the material at an industrially representative scale and support validation for use in aero-engine service environments. Rolls-Royce plc are expected to provide technical input to this project through the Timet /Rolls-Royce shared research agreement.
Project supervisors: Dr H M Davies/Professor M R Bache/Mr Iain Berment-Parr (TIMET)
Available resources/facilities: full suite of ISM testing and characterisation facilities (plus College of Engineering AIM facilities as necessary)
