Materials Engineering: Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship at Swansea University: Manufacturing development of microneedles

Following successful products in the cosmetics market (www.radara.co.uk), Innoture Medical Technology Limited (www.Innoture.co) now seek to develop their technology for the delivery of therapeutic pharmaceutical substances though the outer layer of skin using microneedles. This is a pain free alternative to traditional hypodermic needles which is about to change how medicines can be delivered transdermally. Innoture Limited have a patented technique for large-scale manufacture of microneedles. This project will explore the unique manufacturing process so that it can be optimised and made more efficient. This project will combine production testing, via additive manufacturing and optical analysis, so that the process can also be made more robust and flexible to produce a greater variety of microneedles, in different shapes and sizes, depending on the application. The student will join a small enthusiastic team within Innoture collaborating with Swansea University’s College of Engineering, a Top 10 UK University for Engineering Research (REF 2014), on both campuses.
The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 30 credit award.
Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in engineering or physical sciences, with a 2.1 or above. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.

The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £11,587 p.a. dependent upon the applicant’s financial circumstances.
There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
