The causal relationship between air pollution and ill-health is well-studied and robustly established, and in the UK alone air pollution contributes to shortening the life of an estimated 50,000 British people each year (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-38979754). The entire population is exposed to air pollution, but the health impacts of this exposure are experienced much more commonly in vulnerable people, particularly those with pre-existing health conditions.
Monitoring air pollution, however, is expensive and the ways in which this data is used varies widely across the UK. To improve the abilities of local governments across the UK to provide current air pollution levels to patients as well as the general public, it is imperative that:
cost-effective and accurate monitoring systems are developed.clinically-relevant pollution thresholds are identified and then used in air quality management.information about air quality is provided to the public in a form that is conducive to risk reduction in particular and adaptation of behaviour in general.
The overall aims of this studentship are to engage with local government and other stakeholders (the public, private and third sectors) to better understand the impact of air quality on people’s health and wellbeing, to design low-cost monitoring devices for manufacture and evaluate the data they capture to help inform strategies for behaviour change.

Applicants should have a first class or upper second class (2.1) honours degree in a technical discipline (electrical engineering, environment science), preferably with a substantial research skills element. As specified above, we seek a candidate with a strong interest and/or track record in both technical engineering and management disciplines.
Applications are welcome from International Students on the understanding that the difference between the fees awarded (£4,195) and the international fee rate would be met by the successful candidate.
The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax-free stipend of £14,296 p.a.
