We are seeking a full-time, highly motivated PhD candidate to perform high-quality research in the field of shale gas extraction. The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of Dr Zhongwei Chen at the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team in partnership with industry partners. This scholarship is funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Projects scheme.

Australia’s shale gas reserves are expected to be sizeable, but many Australian shales have different characteristics from North American ones – meaning that their successful shale gas development experience cannot be directly applied to Australian reservoirs. The main objectives of this PhD project are to conduct systematic microstructural, geomechanical and geochemical characterisation of shale samples using cutting edge facilities, to develop novel experimental methods to quantify the response of shale permeability to a number of key parameters such as in-situ stress and water, and to visualise fluid flow in nanopores validated by direct experimental observations. An assessment of the potential shale gas production in areas like Cooper Basin will also be carried out using the in-house reservoir simulator with the integration of available field data collected at the exploration wells.
