In this PhD project, you will work on leading edge and exciting research in chemistry and materials science: chemical functionalization of 2D materials using both covalent and noncovalent approaches with different organic reactions towards applications in energy storage devices such as supercapacitors. You will be part of a dynamic and international group, with friendly working atmosphere and high-impact scientific outputs.
The research of Xiaoyan Zhang’s group focuses on combination of organic functional molecules with 2D materials through covalent and noncovalent approaches, by a proper design of organic chemistry. The as-prepared molecules/2D materials hybrid systems are further explored in applications such as energy storage. Through the research, an understanding of the structure-property-function relationship for this new class of materials is achieved. In particular, knowledge on how the molecules affect the properties of 2D materials will result.
The PhD position will be located at the division of Chemistry and Biochemistry, one of the four research divisions at the Department of Chemistry and chemical engineering. The division offers an international dynamic work environment with state of the art equipment, a high percentage of young researchers as well as several well-established scientists in different branches of the basic chemistry disciplines. The research questions dealt with at the division ranges from advancing solar energy conversion to understanding nerve signals and learning. A diverse set of methodologies and techniques, such as chemical synthesis, electronic spectroscopy and imaging mass spectrometry, are used to answer these questions. The division aims to provide excellent research and teaching as well as an outstanding doctoral training.
**Main responsibilities
**The majority of your working time is devoted to your research studies. As a PhD student you are expected to develop own ideas, guided by your supervisor, and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form.
In addition, the position will normally include 10-20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The employment is limited to four years, with a possibility to be extended for a maximum of one year depending on how much administrative duties that is included during the way.
