A fully-funded 3-year PhD scholarship is available in the Department of Geography, Swansea University on “’Green jobs’ and Emotional Labour”.
Climate action demands the growth of green industries and a proliferation of green jobs. New generations of workers may increasingly be motivated by environmental concerns and the green credentials of their labour. However, there already exists a significant environmental and conservation sector within the economy. This studentship will explore the emotional labour of environmental and conservation workers and how they ‘see’ and ‘feel’ the climate and nature emergencies through their work.
It is envisaged that data will be generated through mobile and situated interviews with environmental practitioners in Wales. The research will explore the emotional response of environmental practitioners to climatic and ecological change in their work and how this relates to broader environmental action.
Consideration of the labour experiences of workers whose labour is steered by, and requires detailed knowledge of, the climate and nature emergencies will contribute to our understanding of those emergencies and help define new ‘green’ jobs and industries as they develop.
There is considerable scope for the student to contribute to the specific focus of the PhD research.
The successful candidate will benefit from an emerging and very active interdisciplinary research network in this area.
