Following in 2005 a call for application by the European Commission, the Consortium of the Joint Master’s course in "Global Studies – A European perspective" came into existence and in 2010 funding was approved for a further 5 years. The founding members of the European Master in Global Studies (EMGS) Consortium comprised besides the University of Leipzig three leading European universities, namely the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), the University of Vienna (Austria) and the University of Wroclaw (Poland).
Students choosing the programme study at two different European universities, at each for one academic year. After having successful completed the programme they are able to analyze processes of globalization in various academic ways and are thus well-prepared for both, academic positions dealing with global phenomena and jobs in supranational agencies and non-governmental organizations, as they are ready to work as intercultural mediators and in the fields of development cooperation, economy, management and beyond.
The EMGS-consortium holds a winter school and a summer school every year, which consists of workshops and lectures offered by the teaching staff of all our Consortium universities. During these events student groups from the different places come together to get to know their colleagues and to experience the transnationality of their study programm.
