Curved steelwork is being utilised more and more as an element in the construction and energy & power sectors. Due to its speed and lower cost, budgetary restrictions are encouraging many companies to use cold-roller bending in in preference to hot bending. Despite its wide usage, the effects of the cold bending process on the structure, dimensions and mechanical properties of steel sections are still unclear and are currently not considered in structural design calculations. 
Project Aims: 
The initial focus of the research will be to understand the interaction between strain imparted on the product through the bending process and its effect on both the initial mechanical properties and geometric tolerances of the sections prior to bending. This will be investigated both by standard mechanical test methods such as tensile, hardness and impact testing but also by more novel methods which can be performed in the new laboratories at Swansea University Bay Campus.The work will be focussed on high frequency welded structural hollow sections from several manufacturers, in both circular and square profiles of similar dimensions, covering a number of different production and supply methods commonly used for these products.A range of strain rates will be considered.The work will require some regular travelling, both in undertaking bending operations at one or more specialist UK bending companies plus regular review meetings at the sponsor’s sites.The object of the research is to produce a recommended practice or guidance document that can be adopted by companies specifying curved steel where compliance with European legislation and documentation is necessary.
An understanding of the effect of the cold bending process and how this changes the mechanical properties of both circular and rectangular hollow sections.An understanding of the effect on how the cold bending process alters the geometric profiles of hollow sections manufactured in different ways.Provide information that could be used in the production of a new recommended practice or guidance document covering the cold roller bending of structural hollow sections.

Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project would be suitable for someone with a degree in materials or chemistry student, with an interest in metallurgy.

You must be a UK or EU citizen (i.e. eligible for ‘home’ tuition fees at the University) and have the right to work in Wales at the end of your studies.You must be resident in West Wales and the Valleys at the point of enrolment and throughout the duration of your studies.You must not be financially able to participate without the award of grant funding.
