Engineering: Fully Funded M2A MSc by Research Scholarship at Swansea University: Characterisation tool of Perovskite photovoltaics based on TCSPC

Edinburgh Instruments Ltd is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of leading edge spectroscopic instrumentation and gas detection solutions. The company is a pioneer of Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) and offers high-end systems for emission detection and lifetime measurements.
SPECIFIC is a world-leading research centre scaling-up Perovskite photovoltaics for building-integration. Based on the new Bay Campus of Swansea University, SPECIFIC houses over 40 engineers and scientists, and collaborates with major industrial and academic partners.
Reported for the first time 5 years ago, Perovskite-based materials are now revolutionising the development of photovoltaic technologies. It has emerged from the SPECIFIC’s team that there is a need for a more advanced characterisation tool to provide engineers with information about photocurrent generation in their devices. TCSPC is an experimental technique with excellent capabilities to meet this need, but development work is required to adapt the technique for this specific application.
Project Aims:
The aim of this 1-year MSc project will be to design an application for Perovskite PV characterisation utilising TCSPC. The student will develop kinetic models and a code for the numerical simulation of experimental data to provide engineers with the critical device parameters of (i) charge extraction rates, (ii) charge lifetimes and (ii) charge trapping and de-trapping rates.

Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project is suitable for Science and Engineering graduates with foundations in solid state physics/chemistry and good coding skills. Understanding of PV is desirable.

You must be a UK or EU citizen (i.e. eligible for ‘home’ tuition fees at the University) and have the right to work in Wales at the end of your studies.You must be resident in West Wales and the Valleys at the point of enrolment and throughout the duration of your studies.You must not be financially able to participate without the award of grant funding.
