Engineering: Fully Funded M2A EngD Scholarship at Swansea University: Oxide Engineering on TCCT packaging steel
- Full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend
- Deadline: May 20, 2018
Start date: October 2018
Sponsoring Company: Tata Steel Packaging
In 2017, Tata Steel has decided to commercialise TCCT (Trivalent Chromium Coated Technology), in response to REACH legislation banning the use of Cr6+ based chemicals in industrial processes. The first coils will be produced in IJmuiden works (NL), but Trostre works (UK) will follow soon. Swansea University and SPECIFIC have contributed greatly to this effort by developing theories and background information on the properties and performance.
Work by other Eng-Docs has focused on the metallic inner layer of TCCT, both as such and in relation to the substrate. The outer oxide is known to determine important parameters such as adhesion and corrosion resistance, and is barely investigated.
The first part will consist of investigating the link between surface oxides (structure and chemistry) and performance. The second part will start when production has started in earnest (especially at Trostre works), which is to link process settings to performance, via characterisation.
The Athena SWAN Charter recognises work undertaken by institutions to advance gender equality. The College of Engineering is an Athena SWAN bronze award holder and is committed to addressing unequal gender representation.
Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. The research will encompass electrochemical/performance experiments (SVET, SKP, CV, deformation, etc.) as well as in-depth characterisation (FEG-SEM, FIB-TEM, XPS, etc.). A background in chemistry, materials science and/or physics will be required.
We would normally expect the academic and English Language requirements to be met by point of application. For details on the University’s English Language entry requirements, please visit – http://www.swansea.ac.uk/admissions/englishlanguagerequirements/
Our funders require applicants to also meet the following eligibility criteria:
