Engineering: Fully Funded M2A MSc by Research Scholarship: Development of Graphene/Aerogel Nanocomposites
Thinking laterally and taking into account the rapidity of material science and the speed of developments through the past decade it is abundantly clear that a process to produce lightweight strong panels would address an expansive requirement to reduce overall weight, to increase strength, to reduce vibration and maintain thermal stability in applications such as Aerospace, Automotive and Trains.
Drawing on knowledge of Composites, the project aims to offer a material and manufacturing process which can be “tweaked” to suit a particular application, an example being an encompassing battery case for Electric Vehicles with inbuilt fire retardancy to mitigate against runaway lithium reactions, or perhaps improved ability to resist bird or drone strike damage to aircraft wings. Such a material can replace a lot of metallic applications and with scale up be competitive in direct price values, the ability to offer varying grades gives it a very flexible attractive option for designers when considering new products.
Project aims include:
  • Investigating grades of Aerogel in combination with Graphene and Carbon Fibre, to determine best balance of performance properties, delivering rapid feedback on processing routes.
  • Respond to interest from Aircraft, Automotive and Rail industries through investigating routes to cost effective rapid manufacturing of aerogel/graphene material.

We welcome applications from candidates with an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree (minimum level 2:1), or a combination of degree and equivalent experience to the same level.
A background / interest in Composites (selection, testing, manufacture and joining) and Nano-Composites (selection, compounding and testing), FEA design and analysis, would be desirable.
Normally, we would expect candidates to have met the University’s English Language requirements (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5+ in each component) by point of application. For details on the University’s English Language entry requirements, please visit our website for more information.
