PhD Scholarship for UK or EU applicants in the field of: Engineering
Explosions, ballistic and impact scenarios form very different types of threat. In recent conflicts improvised explosive devices have provided a complex threat against which to mitigate. Survivors show complex and life-changing injuries. Computational modelling offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between different blast and ballistic threats to develop new options for protective armours. With the rise of additive manufacturing, alongside novel composite fabrics being continually developed, creative designs can now be prototyped and tested more readily.
Protective materials will be examined and designed in silico, accounting for the interaction of the armour with the body. The topics of trauma biomechanics and dynamic material behaviour will be studied. The student will create finite element and computational fluid dynamic simulations of blast and ballistic scenarios for armour design evaluation. Designs will then be manufactured and characterised at Swansea University. Final model validation will be delivered through armour testing against real blast and ballistic loading at Radnor Range.
Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SME’s and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 3 years of funding with a 6 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 60 credit award.
Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.We would normally expect the academic and English Language requirements to be met by point of application. For details on the University’s English Language entry requirements, please visit – http://www.swansea.ac.uk/admissions/englishlanguagerequirements/
The TOEFL® test is a popular option for students to meet the English-language requirements for scholarships.
The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £14,483 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances.
There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
