Engineering: Fully Funded European Space Agency and Swansea University PhD Scholarship

  • Phd
  • Full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend
  • 3 February 2019

This scholarship is funded by the European Space Agency and Swansea University.
Subject areas: Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials
Start date: April 2019
Perovskite solar cells are perhaps the hottest topic in the field of solar cells because it has high power conversion efficiency and potentially be fabricated at much lower cost than silicon solar cells. Furthermore, they have unusual properties such as they are very thin/light-weight and pretty flexible, which makes them have super-high specific power (power generated per weight of the solar cells), and ultra-high flexibility. These special properties imply that they have attractive potential for space applications, which specific power and stowed volume is key issue. The aim of the project is to study their stability under mimic space environment and fabricate flexible perovskite solar cells for space applications. The student will characterise the perovskite films/devices by a range of advanced characterisation techniques and fabricate the solar cells with the world class fabrication facilities at SPECIFIC, Swansea University. Furthermore, there are opportunities for the student to use the facilities at the European Space Agency (ESA), and the student is expected to spend 6-12 months at ESA for experiments there. The student will be co-supervised by Dr Wing Chung Tsoi (Swansea University) and Dr Carsten Baur (ESA).

Candidates should have a minimum of 2.1 degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry, materials or engineering.

We would normally expect the academic and English Language requirements to be met by point of application. For details on the University‚Äôs English Language entry requirements, please visit ‚Äst

The student will need to be very able, well-motivated and keen to engage with the international science and engineering community via numerous collaborations.

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.

Do you wish to become an international student next year?
Demonstrate your English skills with IELTS.

The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £14,777. There will be additional funds to attend conferences and visit the European Space Agency.
