Start date:Â October 2018
Primary supervisor:Â Dr Sanjay Pant
Location:Â Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering, Bay Campus, Swansea University
An anastomosis is a connection between two blood vessels. While many anastomoses can be imagined for the treatment or palliation of challenging pathophysiologies, particularly in paediatric applications, it is not easy to assess their effect on haemodynamics. This project will create geometric multiscale models of haemodynamics for two pathophysiologies, pulmonary artery hypertension and hypoplastic left heart syndrome, to computationally assess the post-operative pressure and flow distributions. This assessment will then be used to inform on the feasibility, functionality, and design of the anastomoses. Research will include one or more of the following in collaboration with clinicians and academics from the UK, France, and the Netherlands:
Development of multiscale computational fluid dynamics models.Development of methods for inverse problems in haemodynamics.Development of optimisation methodologies for anastomosis design.
Eligibility
Candidates should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (or its equivalent) in engineering, mathematics, or physics, or a Masterâs degree in a subject area related to the project.
A strong background in numerical methods and fluid mechanics is required. Knowledge/experience of programming in at least one compiled language (C, C++, or Fortran) and one interpreted language (MATLAB or Python) is essential. An interest in physiology and good communication skills are desirable.
Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.
Benefits
This scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus an annual stipend of ÂŁ14,777.
