Energy Innovation: Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship: The carbon footprint of carbon nanomaterials made from waste carbon and plastics

This work will focus on the assessment of the energy and materials consumed in the process of creating carbon nanomaterials from waste plastics. Carbon nanomaterials made from waste plastics can be of a single source plastic or be from multiple sources. TrimTabs hold IP on the process of reusing plastics as a carbon feedstock for the manufacture of carbon nanotubes. They wish to understand to the best of their ability the carbon footprint of this process. The company have the motto of “no carbon left behind” and so they seek to know the areas in which the most carbon savings can be made. The key scientific and technical challenge is to understand where the greatest savings on the carbon footprint can be achieved. For example, to achieve a low carbon footprint is there a process or source of carbon that can be employed that would create a net carbon-negative manufacturing process? Or, in the process of producing carbon nanotubes is there a way that the carbon products that are output from the process offset the carbon footprint for other key players in the supply chain?
The technical challenge is to ratify, count, and calculate the carbon intensity of the production process and supply chain. Supply chains are recently found to be inherently changing in rapid time frames. However, it is necessary to adopt to this rapid change in the supply system in order to keep productivity high. Once the supply chain and production process is established then it is possible to potentially determine a method or protocol with a lower carbon footprint. This work will be carried out using industry-standard software to determine the life cycle. The student will receive training using spreadsheets and other relevant simulation software as required.
TrimTabs is technology research company with IP detailing the process of carbon nanotube synthesis from mixed plastic materials. As TrimTabs expands operations their intention is to build a series of pilot plants in the Welsh region and to employ from the local community. They have developed the motto of “no carbon left behind” as a working philosophy. This philosophy drives their innovation towards being a responsible manufacturer of speciality materials.
Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 40 credit award.
Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in any of the physical sciences or engineering subjects. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.
Candidates must be eager to learn, be willing to fail but not be deterred.

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £11,819 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances.
There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
Please note that students receiving KESS II support are not eligible for Postgraduate Master's Degree loan.
