Energy Engineering: Fully Funded PhD at Swansea University: Energy Storage for Zero Carbon 2050

This scholarship is jointly funded by Swansea University.
This PhD position is in Dr Jenny Baker’s group working on energy storage for building and grid support applications. The successful candidate will develop many skills during their PhD including materials characterisation, materials processing, battery testing and publication of scientific articles.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with good written and oral communication skills with a degree (ideally masters) in the Physical Sciences or Engineering. The candidate will be required to collaborate with researchers within Swansea and at other universities as well as with Industrial partners, such as Adphos.
The group is part of a larger project; SPECIFIC (Sustainable Product Engineering Centre for Innovation Functional Industrial Coatings) which is a National Innovation and Knowledge Centre led by Swansea University with corporate partners including Akzo Nobel, Tata Steel Europe and NSG Pilkington. Working collaboratively with a significant number of leading universities such as Cardiff, Bath, Imperial College London and Oxford, SPECIFIC has significant capability and expertise across its team and facilities. With leading research activity into scaling functional coatings for the built environment, SPECIFIC engages with companies of all sizes.
The vision that the partners and collaborators at SPECIFIC share is to transform Buildings into Power stations (BAP) – so that new products and systems are integrated into the building allowing a building to generate, store and release its own energy at a point of use.
This PhD is an ideal opportunity for a candidate wishing to participate in solutions that will reduce emissions and enable a zero carbon electricity network.
Candidates should hold a minimum of upper second class (2:1) honours degree (or its equivalent) in engineering, physical science or similar relevant discipline.
Electronic device fabrication experience and an understanding of microelectronics are highly desirable.

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.
This scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,009.
There will be additional funds available for attending conferences and other necessary expenses where required.
