The Department of Chemistry, Swansea University is looking for a talented PhD student with interest in Organic Synthesis and Polymer Chemistry to join the group led by Dr Mariolino Carta ( The project will focus on the preparation of Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) to be used as heterogeneous catalysts and as potential fillers for novel Mixed Matrix Membranes.
Recently, a new class of PIMs based on Tröger’s base (TB) was introduced; this combines the benefits of the high porosity, which is typical of PIMs, with the presence of two bridgehead tertiary amines that proved to be efficient basic catalytic sites for a variety of important applications. 
Membrane technology is a rapid advancing method aimed to substitute or improve current gas separation techniques implemented in power plants, for instance aiming at the removal of CO2¬†(CCS), or the separation of CO2/H2, O2/N2¬†and H2/N2. Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs) are a new class of materials prepared by the dispersion of an insoluble component (filler) into a soluble organic polymer (matrix), and combine the benefits derived by the processability of the organic support and the separation properties of the Ô¨Āllers.¬†
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative student with an interest in interdisciplinary, collaborative research. Ideally, the candidate will have a background in Synthetic Organic and/or Materials Chemistry. Knowledge of polymeric materials characterisation is desirable, but not essential. The student must be capable of organising time and work efficiently, have excellent communication skills and should be keen to work independently, as well as within a collaborative network. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in the dynamic research environment in the Chemistry Department with close links to Chemical Engineering, SPECIFIC and with other International collaborators.


Applicants must have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree and/or a Master's degree with Merit (or equivalent qualification) in Chemistry or related discipline.
