Chemistry: EPSRC Funded PhD Scholarship at Swansea University: Hybrid catalysis for solar fuel production
- Full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend
- January 31, 2018
Dr Moritz F. KuehnelProfessor Juan Mareque-Rivas
Start date: 1 April or 1 October 2018
The Department of Chemistry, Swansea University is looking for a talented PhD student with interest in bridging the gap between molecular and materials chemistry to join the solar fuels research group led by Moritz Kuehnel (https://moritz-kuehnel.com). Our research is focusing on storing solar energy in chemical fuels through integrating molecular catalysts with nanomaterials into hybrid photocatalysts and electrocatalysts. The PhD project aims at developing novel supramolecular integration methodology and will involve the synthesis of nanomaterials and molecular catalysts as well as the assembly and characterisation of hybrid materials. Electrochemistry and photocatalysis will be used for performance assessment of new materials and catalysts.
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative individual with an interest in interdisciplinary, collaborative research beyond the traditional discipline boundaries. Ideally, the candidate will have a background in synthetic inorganic, organic and/or materials chemistry. Knowledge of electrochemical methods is desirable, but not essential. The student must be capable of organising time and work effectively, have excellent communication skills, and should be keen to work independently as well as within a collaborative network. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in the dynamic research environment in the Chemistry Department with close links to Chemical Engineering and SPECIFIC.
Applicants must have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree and/or a Master's degree with Merit (or equivalent qualification) in Chemistry or related discipline.
For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests.
Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates or those with indefinite right to remain in the UK only.
The TOEFL® test is a popular option for students to meet the English-language requirements for scholarships.
This is a three year fully-funded EPSRC scholarship covering UK/EU tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £14,553 (RCUK rate).
