Manganese is found in groundwater or lake water with low dissolved oxygen at concentrations as high as 1 mg/L or more. The occurrence of manganese in water is a significant issue for water utilities since it causes aesthetic problems such as laundry and fixture staining which lead to customer complaints. A limit target for manganese in treated water of only 2 ug/L was set to ensure compliance. The removal of manganese is most commonly carried out through precipitation by oxidation using air, chlorine, ozone or potassium permanganate. The precipitated manganese is then removed using sedimentation or most commonly sand filtration. Greensand filtration, where both oxidation and filtration simultaneously take place, is also common. Although sand filters have been successfully used to remove the precipitated manganese, they are expensive to install and operate. Hence, there is a need to develop new efficient and less expensive filtration technologies for manganese removal in water. This project will precisely address the filtration of precipitated manganese post chlorination and pH correction in selected Welsh Water treatment sites using novel types of fibre filters.

The main resources for this project are available and funding is provided to research costs (e.g. consumables, water analysis and travel).
Candidates should have, or be expected to gain an upper second class (2.1) honours degree, preferably a 1st class honours degree in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience in water treatment and a driving license are advantageous.

The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend for UK/EU candidates but tuition fees (£4,327) only for international candidates.

UK/EU candidates: The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £11,586.
International candidates: The scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees (£4,327) only and the candidate is expected to make up the difference.
