This scholarship is funded by Kidney Wales and Swansea University's College of Human and Health Sciences.

Subject areas: Applied Health Psychology - Chronic Condition Management

This PhD project will explore contemporary empirical approaches to encouraging positive self-management behaviours for young people living with Chronic Kidney Disease. Research has shown that managing kidney disease is extremely demanding and on occasion it can result in tragic consequences for patients. This is more so when the individual has poor mental health and a negative perception of their condition and themselves. Building on work undertaken by Kidney Wales as part of their “Can Do Mind” mission, this project will be designed in partnership with young people living with Chronic Kidney Disease, to better understand the challenges they face and develop appropriate psychosocial interventions to enhance key factors in self-management which will include areas such as adaptive coping behaviours and developing resilience to support physical and psychosocial wellbeing. It is likely that this project will involve an iterative approach and involve a mixture of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

It is anticipated that interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place on Thursday, 23 August 2018.
