Aerospace Engineering: Fully Funded EPSRC DTP PhD Scholarship: Active Control methods in Nonlinear Aeroelasticity

The main aims of this project are to study the dynamic behaviour of a nonlinear aeroelastic system, including due to gust inputs, and to investigate the use of a variety of linear/nonlinear active control approaches (including Robust Control) that might be used to mitigate vibrations in the system. The project will involve analytical, computational and experimental components of research, each complementing the others. The analytical/computational facets of the project will include the creation of suitable aeroelastic models for simulation and analysis (using existing software such as Matlab, SolidWorks, Nastran etc.). The experimental facet will primarily be based in the Swansea University College of Engineering wind tunnel facility in Bay Campus, with suitable scaled nonlinear aerofoil/wing models mounted in the College's low-speed wind tunnel. Active control will be implemented in the presence of wind flow and/or gusts, using the dSPACE real-time control system already available within the College. An 8-channel and two 6-channel DataPhysics systems are also available for modal testing and analysis which will be required during experiments. Other experimental facilities available include a DIC (Digital Image Correlation) and a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system. As this research is in line with research being carried out by staff within the Aerospace Structures Research Group in the College, there is a good base of knowledge and expertise that can be benefited from.
Available resources/facilities: Low-speed wind tunnel, dynamic laboratory, dSPACE real-time control system, DIC, PIV, relevant software (Matlab, Nastran etc.)
Candidates should hold a minimum of an upper second class (2:1) honours degree (or its equivalent) in Mechanical/Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or similar discipline.
Familiarity with modelling in Matlab/Simulink and experience in experimental work involving real-time control systems (e.g. National Instruments, dSPACE) would be beneficial.

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.
The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,009. Stipend and tuition fees available to applicants who have been resident in the UK for 3 years. EU applicants not meeting this condition are eligible for tuition fees only.
There will be additional funds available for research expenses.
