What is 4CITIES? 4CITIES is an immersive, two-year, interdisciplinary Erasmus Mundus Master Course in urban studies, incorporating geography, sociology, history, cultural studies, and governance studies. Organised within UNICA, the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe, and co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, 4CITIES brings together 25–30 students each year from around the world and across the academic spectrum. The language of instruction is English and proof of fluency is required. Graduates receive a master of science (MSc.) degree in urban studies.
Where is 4CITIES?
The two-year 4CITIES programme spends a semester in each of four European capital cities: Brussels, Vienna, Copenhagen, and Madrid. Additional excursions to a diverse set of cities such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, Zagreb, Belgrade, Malmö, and Zaragoza are also organised in each semester. During summers and holidays, students self-organise trips to cities throughout Europe and occasionally beyond. It is not uncommon to visit 20 countries and more than 50 cities over the course of the programme
Who is 4CITIES?
4CITIES is a collaboration of six universities in four countries, with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels serving as the primary administrative centre. At each university, the programme is hosted by a different research institute or faculty, and courses are taught by an interdisciplinary team of approximately 20 professors and lecturers. Student profiles are even more diverse, with more than 40 countries and 25 academic fields represented. The shared perspective linking them all is that the city is a complex adaptive system that must be understood and experienced before it can be responsibly changed.

4CITIES seeks students who are informed, engaged, experienced, and highly motivated, and recognises that aspiring urbanists travel many different roads. Applicants can come from anywhere in the world and are eligible for 4CITIES if they have completed a 180 ECTS academic bachelor degree or its equivalent in geography, sociology, literature, cultural studies, architecture, planning, economics, political science, public management, tourism, history, criminology, leisure studies, media studies, or a similar discipline. Additionally, proof of fluency in English is required and should be sought well in advance of the application window (see all requirements in our How To Apply section).
Prospective applicants with a degree from a field not included in the list above should contact us. Please explain how your degree has helped prepare you for 4CITIES and provide more information on the specific coursework you have undertaken. Students who have not completed their undergraduate degree at the time of applying but will do so before the enrolment deadline if admitted to 4CITIES are also eligible. In such cases offers of admission are conditional, meaning that successful completion of an undergraduate degree must be demonstrated before the offer of admission can be finalised. If your official date of graduation is after the start of 4CITIES classes, please contact us.
In order to be considered, your application must be completed in full, in accordance with all stated specifications, and submitted before the application deadline.
