Nanochemistry: EPSRC Funded PhD Studentship at Swansea University: Developing synthesis strategies for advanced colloidal nanostructures

Swansea University is a UK top 30 institution for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014), and has been named Welsh University of the Year 2017 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Start date:  1 January 2018

Supervisors:

Dr Christian Klinke, Department of Chemistry, College of ScienceProfessor Juan Mareque-Rivas, Department of Chemistry, College of Science

Project overview:

The field of colloidal nanostructures is developing very rapidly. Semiconducting nanocrystals function already as superior fluorescence dyes in modern TV screens. Beyond, they can be used in opto-electronic devices, in sensors and as catalysts. The Swansea University is seeking a top class candidate to undertake a PhD studentship in the field of nanochemistry. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment in the Chemistry Department.

The project will involve developing synthesis strategies for advanced colloidal nanostructures including two-dimensional semiconductors and their characterization. The structures will be used as conduction channel in advanced opto-electronic spin devices. Such research will enable new materials for faster and cheaper information processing. The PhD studentship offers an exciting opportunity to combine chemical and physical approaches to nanotechnology in a quickly developing field.

Swansea University strongly encourages research collaboration worldwide and there may be opportunities for short term secondment in internationally leading laboratories in the UK or abroad. This opportunity also provides a substantial tax free stipend equivalent to many graduate jobs.
