Chemistry: EPSRC Funded PhD Studentship at Swansea University: Nano biotechnology and optical spectroscopy

Project overview

Swansea University is seeking a top class candidate to undertake a PhD studentship in the field of nano biotechnology and nanomedicine. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment. The project will involve developing macro and nanoscale spectroscopic methods including micro-Raman, tip-enhanced Raman and infra-red spectroscopy and imaging to understand cellular surface chemistry with an aim of developing cyber physical systems for early diagnosis of diseases. You will be based at the Department of Chemistry, and work in a dynamic collaborative environment with the Centre for Nano Health, Swansea University Medical School and industry partners. Such research will enable faster and cheaper diagnostic methods required in industrialised as well as in the developing world. This PhD studentship offers an exciting opportunity to combine optical spectroscopy, data analytics and machine learning.

Eligibility

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree and/or a Master's degree with Merit (or equivalent qualification) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering or related discipline and interest in combining informatics with physical science. 

For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. 

Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is open to UK/EU candidates or those with indefinite leave to remain in the UK only.
